I mention Cennini because the continued relevance of his book is a testament to the basic nature of the craft of gilding. His methods influence both my work as a frame conservator and as a designer of new frames. Although writing for students of painting, Cennini specifically and systematically addresses the techniques and problems of gilders. In this systematic treatise, Cennini delivers a huge number of instructions on various artistic disciplines. As he himself was a practitioner and as he referred to several well-known painters, such as Agnolo Gaddi or Giotto, his book is a dependable source on the practices and the materials used by artists in a chronologically and.

Hall builds the novel around two historical references: a quote from French philosopher Gaston Bachelard and an excerpt from Italian artist Cennino d’Andrea Cennini’s book Il libro dell’arte. A discussion on another blog revised an old controversy, namely what size of sword the Italian master Ridolfo Capo Ferro expected his students to use. I am not a student of any seventeenth-century art, whether rhetoric or fencing, so I can't contribute to the discussion with a perspective on what length of sword works best.
